Farrell joins ‘Potter’ spinoff
     2015-August-7  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

COLIN FARRELL is ready to show us his magic. The Irish actor has reportedly joined the “Harry Potter” spinoff “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

The “True Detective” star will play Graves, a wizard whom Newt Scamander encounters in New York.

Fans know Newt as the writer of “Fantastic Beasts,” a textbook Harry studies while attending Hogwarts. In a statement released in 2014, author J.K. Rowling explained what Newt’s position within the Potterverse means for the new film.

“ ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the ‘Harry Potter’ series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” Rowling said at the time. “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the ‘Harry Potter’ books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry’s gets underway.”

Colin’s “Fantastic Beasts” co-stars include Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne as Newt, Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller, Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler. He previously worked with “Harry Potter” franchise veterans Ralph Fiennes and Brendan Gleeson in the 2008 dark comedy “In Bruges.”

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” will cast its spell in theaters Nov. 18, 2016.

Farrell is currently starring on HBO’s second season of “True Detective.” His latest film, Yargos Lanthimos’ “The Lobster,” won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May.(SD-Agencies)
