HOSTED by the People’s Daily and the Shenzhen Municipal Government, the 2015 Media Convergence Development Forum was held at Wuzhou Guest House yesterday.

Media convergence refers to the cooperation of different types of media, including mobile phones and print newspapers.

The forum was mainly speeches and panel discussions focused on news coverage in a mobile age.

The speeches in the morning revolved around the convergence of traditional and new media, and were attended by delegates from several mainstream media organizations in China.

Wang Yibiao, secretary general of the People’s Daily, spoke about his newspaper.

Wang said the People’s Daily now has produced different types of media products, including providing news through mobile sources like WeChat. The newspaper’s app has been downloaded at least 680 million times.

The chief editor of the Guangming Daily, He Dongping, described new media and old media as a “chemical reaction.”

“The traditional media is irreplaceable in its professionalism, authority and quality,” said He. “New media appeals to the youth, and has a higher level of interactivity.”

He cited the Guangming Daily’s media convergence center, which is based on the newly adopted 24-hour content generation system.

The newspaper has 24-hour news coverage through SNS and the newspaper supplies in-depth reports, said He.

Chen Yin, president of the Shenzhen Press Group, touched upon the outdated media structure.

It is, Chen believes, the main obstacle to better media convergence.

“Any corporate structure that will ignite innovation and productivity needs to be considered,” he said.

“Media convergence is content convergence,” said Chen.

Two other speeches were delivered by Xu Rujun, chief of the Economic Daily, and Zhang Haiping, the deputy chief editor of the Liberation Army Newspaper.

At the forum yesterday, a strategic collaborative deal was signed by representatives of the People’s Daily, the People’s Daily’s application division, the Guiyang Municipal Government, ZTE and Huawei.

Xu Qin, the mayor of Shenzhen, said the forum was to improve overall media convergence in Shenzhen.
