Sock away
     2015-August-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Sock是“袜子”,away是“在远处”。Sock away是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: Chinese Valentine’s Day is coming. Do you have any gift ideas for your husband?

B: Of course. My husband has been driving his old Ford for six years. Now I’ve got about US$50,000 socked away for a new car. He would love it. How about you?

A: I have not socked away a big sum of money. I am considering buying my boyfriend a pair of comfortable sneakers.

Note: People seemed to like putting things in socks. We still put Christmas gifts in long stockings today. “To sock away’ means to put money in a safe place for future use. This usage presumably alludes to putting one’s savings in a sock during the first half of the 1900s. There were not many banks at that time.
