逼捐
     2015-August-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Meaning:

“逼” means to “force,” and “捐” means “donation.” This term became a buzzword online after Chinese tycoon Jack Ma found his Weibo account flooded by netizens who pressed him to donate to victims of the chemical storehouse explosion in Tianjin. Xinhua Daily Telegraph published a commentary criticizing those who demanded Ma give out money. “Ma donated 14.6 billion yuan to charity last year, the biggest sum donated by a Chinese,” the commentary said. “Donation is not obligatory, and those who force others to donate are not much different from robbers. They themselves often give out nothing at all.”

    Example:

    A: 天津爆炸后马云被逼捐了。

Tiānjīn bàozhà hòu mǎyún bèi bījuān le。

Some netizens forced Jack Ma to donate to Tianjin explosion victims.

    B: 富人也不容易啊,遇到灾难捐款少了也被骂。 本来捐款就是自愿行为。

Fùrén yě bù róngyì a, yùdào zāinàn juānkuǎn shǎo le yě bèi mà。Běnlái juānkuǎn jìushì zìyuàn xíngwéi。

It’s not easy to be rich. Although donation should be voluntary, rich people often face criticism if they don’t donate a big sum when disasters hit.

    A: 两年前四川雅安地震后,加多宝也曾被逼捐了一个亿。

Liǎngnián qián sìchuān yǎ’ān dìzhèn hòu, jiāduōbǎo yě céng bèi bījuān le yī gè yì。

JDB Group was forced to donate 100 million yuan two years ago when an earthquake hit Ya’an in Sichuan Province.
