A BRITISH woman who struggles with 42N breasts has been denied surgery to reduce them because NHS bosses said her case is not “exceptional.”
Ginny Chapman, from York, suffers from constant back pain and is unable to work — instead claiming £250 (US$392) a week in benefits.
The 20-year-old, who has to get personalized bras made for £95, applied for surgery in June but was turned down despite describing the pain as “unbearable.”
She told The Sun, “My boobs are the equivalent of carrying one-and-a-half stone (9.5 kg) on my chest.
“They are a curse. I’m in constant agony and I can’t believe they don’t think I qualify for the operation. I can’t pay [for the operation] until I have a good job — it is a vicious circle.”
Chapman, who has had several jobs since finishing college aged 17, added that she would love to go to the gym but instead has to watch her friends play basketball.
A spokesman for NHS Scarborough and Ryedale Clinical Commissioning Group, who considered the application, said the case was not deemed to be “clinically exceptional.”
It added in a statement: “The patient does have the opportunity to appeal. To date, no appeal has been received.”
A breast reduction can cost between £5,500 and £6,000 if paid for privately.
Guidance on the NHS website states: “If breast reduction is done to improve appearance rather than for health reasons, it is not normally available on the NHS. Instead, you will need to pay for private treatment.”
