BAYER Leverkusen winger Son Heung-min is closing on a 30-million-euro (US$34.6 million) move to Tottenham Hotspur, as the club’s sporting director Rudi Voller revealed the two sides are trying to reach an agreement.
Son, 23, was set to take part in Leverkusen’s Champions League playoff second leg with Lazio, but was left out of the side due to illness.
The South Korean — who scored 17 goals last season — has emerged as Spurs’ top target after the side failed with bids for West Brom striker Saido Berahino, and Voller says a move could be in the offing.
“There is a request and there are talks. But nothing is done. Son would not have played today anyway, he was sick at the weekend already. At this moment he is our player,’’ he is quoted as telling Germany TV channel Sky.
“I saw many medicals in this business where there was no deal afterwards. We will try to reach an agreement, but only under our conditions.’’
Local newspaper Kolner Stadtanzeiger and national soccer magazine Kicker both reported Wednesday that the South Korea international has already travelled to the English capital, where he will undergo a medical ahead of the transfer.
Son came through the ranks of Hamburg’s youth academy, which he joined aged 16 in 2008. Following three years at the Bundesliga stalwarts, he moved on to Bayer Leverkusen in 2013 for a reported 10 million euros.
The winger, who can also play in a more central role, has played in 62 Bundesliga games for Leverkusen and has scored 21 goals. He has also struck five goals in 19 Champions League appearances for the Bundesliga club.
Son has impressed Spurs with his ability to play in a variety of attacking positions.
