Dapeng plans Jiaochangwei beach revamp
     2015-September-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

JIAOCHANGWEI, a popular coastal resort in Dapeng New Area, is expected to become a beach park that will be put under better management, officials from the new area said at a forum.

An increasing number of Shenzheners are spending their weekends and holidays at Jiaochangwei, a hub of about 350 bed-and-breakfasts that attracted 500,000 people last year.

Many have set up bed-and-breakfasts or other beach-related businesses there. This has also brought disorder and traffic jams to the area.

Previous Chinese-language reports exposed businesses operating illegally and also price gouging.

Officials from the area told a forum of government officials, business owners, tourists and journalists Thursday that they are applying for the right to regulate the beach at Jiaochangwei. The Jiaochangwei beach will be divided into sections, including separate areas for swimming and boating.

The bed-and-breakfasts are also a safety hazard, with many having restaurants on the bottom floor and rooms on the upper floors. It would be a disaster if a fire occurred in one of the restaurants, said Sun Yi, head of the fire department of Dapeng New Area.

“It is dangerous to have restaurants beneath the accommodations and the fire department should impose stricter rules and improve supervision,” said Sun. The department pledged to instruct shop owners about safety issues.

Yu Shaolin, chairman of the Jiaochangwei community holding company, said Jiaochangwei is undergoing renovations and a food street is being built. The separate dining area will open to tourists and hostels will be banned from operating restaurants.

Jiaochangwei is also facing some infrastructure problems such as an insufficient power supply and poor drainage system.

Yu said the government has invested 150 million yuan (US$23.5 million) improving Jiaochangwei’s infrastructure since last year.

The area is the first urban village in Shenzhen to connect homes with drainage pipes that bring sewage to wastewater treatment plants.
