THIS is a figure that Shenzheners may not be proud of. An average of about 10,000 traffic violations are recorded in the city everyday, the Shenzhen traffic police said Monday.
Traffic police said they recorded 2,145,106 violations from January to July. Chinese-language newspapers attributed the huge number of tickets to the wider use of high-definition surveillance cameras on roads around the city.
The police also listed the top 10 spots where the largest numbers of violations were recorded.
The intersection of Minzhi Boulevard and Minkang Road in Longhua New Area saw the highest number of violations with 41,471 in the first seven months, a daily average of 196.
Police said most violators used the right-turn lane when going straight, resulting in a fine of 300 yuan (US$47.60).
The intersection of Bao’an Boulevard and Jinhai Road ranked second on the list, with 32,533 violations recorded. Vehicles going straight commonly use the left-turn lane.
Binhai Boulevard’s Shahe Road West exit saw the third-highest number of violations from January to July, with 26,439 violations recorded. The most common violation was crossing a solid line to turn onto Shahe Road West, earning a 200 yuan fine and 3 penalty points.
Hefty 1,000-yuan fines were issued for drivers who parked on Airport Road South in Bao’an District. The 1,000 yuan-fine is the highest among the top 10 places where violations are recorded. A total 11,100 violations were recorded on the road during the first seven months of the year.
The Shangliao Section of National Highway 107 saw 18,627 instances of yellow-labeled vehicles, vehicles that failed exhaust emissions test, illegally enter Shenzhen from neighboring Dongguan.
