   A doubting Thomas

    生性多疑的人

    这个短语的字面解释是“怀疑的托马斯”,这是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: I have a friend who kindly offers to take us on a tour to his hometown and I've asked Tom to go along. But the dude refuses, saying that the friend would try to sell us something expensive that we don't need on the tour.

B: He's a real doubting Thomas. The other time, he simply wouldn't believe I'd won the car until he saw it with his own eyes.

Note: A doubting Thomas is a skeptic who refuses to believe without direct personal experience. He needs physical or personal evidence in order to believe something. This is a reference to the Apostle Thomas, who refused to believe that the resurrected Jesus had appeared to the 10 other apostles, until he could see and feel the wounds received by Jesus on the cross.
