SHENZHEN’S Party chief, Ma Xingrui, criticized the city ’s slow speed in building new sewage pipelines during a training session Monday.
The training session was a meeting of the city’s bureau chiefs. Ma said the city needs to build 5,938 kilometers of underground sewage pipelines but only 300 kilometers of pipelines are being completed each year.
“This means it will take 20 years for Shenzhen to complete the pipelines. If we don’t act quickly, what will our future look like?” he was quoted by sznews.com as telling the officials.
He urged the officials, who were from multiple districts and different government departments, to take action.
The lack of sewage pipelines was highlighted in June when it was revealed that 130,000 tons of untreated wastewater is being dumped into the Shenzhen Bay each day.
In July, the Municipal Human Settlements and Environment Commission and Municipal Water Resources Bureau said that although the city had 4,268 kilometers of sewage pipelines, it needed to build another 5,938 kilometers. A total 5,730 kilometers of new pipelines are needed outside the original special economic zone.
The city government has listed the construction of sewers as a priority and plans to build 300 kilometers by the end of this year. The annual plan will expand to at least 400 kilometers next year, with hopes of completing the projects by 2025.
The shortage of sewers and drainage is also blamed for flooding. Flooding is common in the city’s low-lying areas, especially in areas outside the original special economic zone.
At the same meeting, Ma also criticized officials for low efficiency in building transportation infrastructure.
“Shenzhen still has large amounts of money sitting idle, not being invested. This is a kind of negligence of duty. The chronic traffic jams at the Chunfeng Road Flyover on Binhe Road have seen little improvements for many years,” he told the officials.
“The projects that have been decided on should be started as soon as possible,” he said.
