PARAMOUNT and Skydance’s “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” has rocketed past “Interstellar” as the highest-grossing 2-D Hollywood film ever at the Chinese box office. The Tom Cruise starrer has earned US$124 million since its release Sept. 8; that tops US$122 million Christopher Nolan’s space epic made last year. It also marks a milestone for e-commerce giant Alibaba, whose Alibaba Pictures made its first Hollywood investment with the actioner.
The film previously had set a record as the biggest 2-D opener in China with US$18 million. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the well-reviewed fifth installment in the series has grossed over US$650 million worldwide.
This has been a big year for Hollywood in China, where Universal’s “Furious 7” (US$390.9 million) was the top-grossing film of all time until just this month, when it was unseated by local pic “Monster Hunt” (US$385 million). The record for “M:I5” comes just before another local movie, “Lost in Hong Kong,” is due to bow Sept. 25 and likely set records of its own. (SD-Agencies)
