Seven award-winning European movies will be screened at Broadway Cinema in Coco Park starting next Sunday.
‘A Most Wanted Man’

“A Most Wanted Man” is a 2014 British espionage thriller film based on the novel of the same name by John le Carre. It is directed by Anton Corbijn. The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Rachel McAdams. It is about a Chechen Muslim illegally immigrating to Hamburg, where he gets caught in the international war on terror.
‘Ernest & Celestine’ (In French with Chinese/English subtitles)
Time: 8:40 p.m., Oct. 29-30
“Ernest & Celestine” is a 2012 animated comedy-drama film directed by Stephane Aubier, Vincent Patar and Benjamin Renner. It is a story of an unlikely friendship between a bear named Ernest and a young mouse named Celestine.
‘Mother, I Love You’
(In Latvian with Chinese subtitles)
Time: 8:35 p.m., Oct. 26; 7 p.m., Oct. 27
“Mother, I Love You” is a drama film directed by Janis Nords. The film was selected as the Latvian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards. Raimonds, a 12-year-old boy, falls into a world of petty crime while trying to stay out of trouble with his mother.
‘Ida’ (In Polish with Chinese/English subtitles)

Set in Poland in 1962, “Ida” is about a young woman on the verge of taking vows as a Catholic nun. Orphaned as an infant during the German occupation of World War II, she must now meet her aunt. The former state prosecutor and only surviving relative tells her that her parents were Jewish. The two women embark on a road trip into the Polish countryside to learn the fate of their family. “Ida” won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, becoming the first Polish film to do so.
‘Hotell’
(In Swedish with English subtitles)

“Hotell” is a 2013 Swedish drama film written and directed by Lisa Langseth. Erika has it all: a good job, lots of friends and a secure relationship. Until the day it all falls apart. Suddenly this perfect life means nothing, and the feelings she once was able to control are no longer within reach. She starts going to group therapy and meets other people suffering from various forms of trauma. One day, Erika and this eclectic group of four people decide to take matters into their own hands and heads off together in search of a way out. They start checking into hotels — places of complete anonymity where one can wake up as a different person.
‘Tavarataivas’ (In Finnish with Chinese subtitles)

“Tavarataivas” is a documentary comedy directed, written and starred by Petri Luukkainen in 2013. Luukkainen conducts an experiment with his own life. He packs all his things and puts them in storage. At first naked in an empty apartment, he only allows himself to retrieve one item per day.
‘Mandariinid’ (In Estonian with Chinese/English subtitles)

“Mandariinid” is a 2013 Estonian-Georgian film directed and written by Zaza Urushadze. During a war in Georgia, Apkhazeti region, in 1990, Estonian man Ivo stays behind to harvest his crop of tangerines. In a bloody conflict at his door, a wounded man is left behind, and Ivo is forced to take him in. The film carries a pacifist message and examines wartime realities regarding the meaning of how to be human. It was nominated as a Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards and was nominated at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards for best foreign language film.
