Meaning:

    “狗” means “dog,” and “带” means “band.” Literally meaning “dog leash,” this buzzword among Chinese Internet users, however, is the transliteration of the English term “go die.” Singer and actor Huang Zitao, a former member of EXO and EXO-M, first used the term in his rap, which was quickly picked up by Chinese netizens. It’s often used in two kinds of situations. Either one tells another to “go die” when extremely annoyed, or one can use it on oneself to express frustration (“I want to go die”) or determination (“I won’t easily go die”). Some netizens have also used it as an adjective to mean “doomed, very bad.”

    A: 你的论文写的怎么样了？

    Nǐ de lùnwén xiě de zěnmeyàng le?

    How is your thesis?

    B: 刚刚完成了提纲。

    Gānggāng wánchéng le tígāng。

    I’ve just finished the synopsis.

    A: 下个月就要交了，你如果进度一直这么慢就要狗带了。

    Xiàgè yuè jìuyào jiāo le, nǐ rúguǒ jìndù yīzhí zhème màn jìuyào gǒudài le。

    The deadline is next month. You will be doomed if you keep lagging behind.

    B: 我会抓紧的，不会轻易狗带。

    Wǒ huì zhuājǐn de, bùhuì qīngyì gǒudài。

    I will catch up and won’t easily give up.
