CONSTRUCTION of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Corridor, which will give Shenzhen direct road access to the western Pearl River Delta area, will start before the end of this year, according to an announcement made at a forum on the coordinated development of Shenzhen and Zhongshan on Thursday.
The Shenzhen Municipal Transport Commission confirmed that it has opened bidding for the roads connecting the bridge on the Shenzhen side.
The project on the Shenzhen and Zhongshan sides will start construction before the end of this year. The undersea tunnel will be approved by the National Reform and Development Commission as early as the end of the year, Shenzhen’s transport commission said.
A public notice from the commission said the corridor will be connected with the Zhongjiang Expressway in Zhongshan, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway to the south of Shenzhen’s airport, and the Jihe Expressway to the east of the airport.
The interchange flyovers on the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Corridor with the Shenzhen airport through the Shenzhen-Guangzhou Riverside Expressway and its auxiliary roads linking with Dachan Bay will be built first.
According to a design bidding invitation released by the Guangdong Provincial Transport Department on Oct. 21, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Corridor, which will link the two economic circles of the Pearl River Delta, is 30 kilometers to the south of Humen Bridge and 38 kilometers to the north of Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao Bridge, which is still under construction.
The main body of the bridge is 24 kilometers, including 22.4 kilometers running over the sea.
It currently takes Shenzhen drivers two to three hours to reach Zhongshan via Humen Bridge.
It’s hoped that the 30-billion-yuan (US$4.76 billion) project, which will be finished in 2020, will drive development in the area.
The corridor will have eight lanes and its speed limit will be 100 kilometers per hour. After completion of the corridor, the trip to Zhongshan from Shenzhen will be cut to 30 minutes.
