The BBC Philharmonic will collaborate with Korean-American violinist Sarah Chang for a concert Saturday. The program will be Britten’s “Simple Symphony,” Sibelius’ “Violin Concerto in D Minor” and Elgar’s “Enigma Variations.”
Chang first played as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1989. She enrolled at the Juilliard School to study music, graduated in 1999 and continued to study music in college. During the 1990s and 2000s, Chang had major roles as a soloist with many of the world’s major orchestras.
Chang plays a 1717 Guarneri del Gesu violin, which she received from the late Isaac Stern, and uses a variety of bows — she has said that she prefers a Pajeot for Mozart and Bach, a Sartory for Tchaikovsky and Sibelius concertos and two Dominique Peccattes for other music.
The BBC Philharmonic is a national British broadcasting symphony orchestra, one of five radio orchestras maintained by the British Broadcasting Corporation, and is a department of the BBC North Group division. The orchestra’s primary concert venue is the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester.
“Violin Concerto in D Minor” is the only concerto that Sibelius wrote, though he composed several other smaller-scale pieces for solo instruments and orchestras, including six Humoresques for violin and orchestra. One noteworthy feature of the work is the way in which an extended cadenza for the soloist takes on the role of the development section in the sonata form first movement.
