Cup of Joe
     2015-November-9  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Joe是个常见的男子名,a cup of Joe是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: Would you like some orange juice, Mike?

B: I’d prefer a steaming hot cup of Joe. It’s the only drink that fuels me for the rest of the day.

Note: “A cup of Joe” is an American nickname for coffee. There are two popular theories about the origin of this phrase. One is in regards to Josephus Daniels, who was secretary of the navy. In June, 1914, he banned all U.S. navy ships from serving alcoholic beverages. The sailors weren’t too thrilled with the decision, because they had to resort to the next strongest drink on the list, which was coffee! The sailors nicknamed the drink after him, thus it became “a cup of Joe.” The other explanation is more plausible. “Joe” can simply mean an average man. And a drink involving the name “Joe” would mean that the drink is for an average person like you and me.
