Dance show ‘Shanghai Tango’
     2015-November-9  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Internationally renowned dancer and choreographer Jin Xing will bring her modern dance “Shanghai Tango” to town. “Shanghai Tango,” a retrospective of works by the choreographer, features 10 pieces mixing East and West in dance, music and costumes.

“Shanghai Tango” does not include tango, but the use of music by Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla lends a tango influence. “Shanghai Tango,” which also includes music by John Williams, Johann Strauss, Rene Aubry and others, provides a glimpse of contemporary Shanghai, a cosmopolitan city that melds cultures.

Jin is a Chinese ballerina, modern dancer, choreographer, actress and is the owner of the contemporary dance company Shanghai Jin Xing Dance Theater. She is one of the first and most recognizable trans women in Chinese media.

Jin won a national dance contest with a Central Asian ethnic dance and in 1987 went to New York to study modern dance for four years. Jin then traveled and performed in Europe and taught dance in Rome from 1991 to 1993, went on a world tour and then returned to China at the age of 26. Jin underwent sex reassignment surgery in 1996.
