Art of welding workshop this Saturday
     2015-November-12  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Fifteen Chinese artists will exhibit their sculptures and installations at Shenzhen Central Park, intersection of Hongli and Huafu roads, starting this Friday.

Entitled “Urban Implant,” the exhibition uses public space as an outdoor museum, letting works of art loose in the city, set under the light of day where they intrude upon our daily lives. Now in its third year, the event is organized by the Shenzhen Public Art Center to integrate art with natural landscapes.

Meanwhile, a welding workshop will be held Saturday afternoon to let locals experience the art of welding. Welding is a fabrication process that causes coalescence between materials such as metals, thermoplastics and others. In welding, heat is used to melt the pieces while a filler material is used to form a weld pool of molten material. When the weld pool solidifies, a strong joint is formed.

Welding is an important process for the construction of various objects and structures and it can be applied to the creation of functional objects as well as works of art, such as sculptures. The process of welding functional objects is often uncomplicated because it is performed with the sole purpose of joining materials together. Sculptural welding, on the other hand, requires extensive knowledge and skill because it involves welding materials of different shapes and colors.

Because welding can be dangerous, the organizers are only allowing people aged between 18 and 50 to attend the event. Sign up in advance by emailing szdiaosuyuan@126.com. Please put “银焊艺术工作坊” (“art of welding workshop”) in the subject line.

    Exhibition dates:

    Nov. 13-Dec. 17

    Welding workshop:

    2:30-4:30 p.m., Nov. 14

Venue: Zone E, Shenzhen Central Park, intersection of Hongli and Huafu roads, Futian District (福田区红荔路与华富路交界深圳中心公园E区)

Metro: Longgang Line, Lianhua Village Station (莲花村站), Exit C(Cao Zhen)
