German movie week at Broadway

    Six German movies released last year will be screened at Broadway Cinema in Coco Park starting Thursday.

    ‘Who Am I — No System Is Safe’ (In German with English/Chinese subtitles)

    “Who Am I — No System Is Safe” is a thriller film directed by Baran bo Odar. It is centered on a computer hacker group in Berlin that gears toward global fame. It was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.

    Time: Nov. 19, 7 p.m.; Nov. 21, 9:35 p.m.

    ‘Victoria’ (In English/German with Chinese subtitles)

    “Victoria” is a drama film directed by Sebastian Schipper, starring Laia Costa and Frederick Lau. A young Spanish woman who has newly moved to Berlin finds her flirtation with a local guy turns potentially deadly as their night out with his friends reveals a dangerous secret.

    The movie was screened in the main competition section of the 65th Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution for Cinematography.

    It was one of eight films shortlisted by Germany to be their submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards. However, it lost after it was disqualified by the Academy because of its high percentage of English dialogue. It is noteworthy for its filming style, with the final cut constituted of a single continuous take.

    ‘We Are Young, We Are Strong’ (In German with English/Chinese subtitles)

    Directed by Alex Richanbach, “We Are Young, We Are Strong” is a comedy about guys who act like girls and girls who act like guys.

    Time: Nov. 20, 7 p.m., 9:30 p.m.

    ‘Labyrinth of Lies’ (In German with Chinese subtitles)

    “Labyrinth of Lies” is a drama film directed by Giulio Ricciarelli. It exposes the conspiracy of prominent German institutions and government branches to cover up the crimes of Nazis during World War II. The movie was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. It was selected to be Germany’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards.

    Time: Nov. 22, 7 p.m.; Nov. 23, 9:05 p.m.

    ‘The Lies of the Victors’

    (In German with English/Chinese subtitles)

    Directed by Christoph Hochhausler, “The Lies of the Victors” is a thriller centering on Fabian who is assigned a young female intern. He has her investigate a death at a zoo and is shocked when his story links up with her investigation.

    Time: Nov. 22, 9:15 p.m.; Nov. 23, 7 p.m.

    ‘Phoenix’ (In German with English/Chinese subtitles)

    A disfigured concentration-camp survivor (Nina Hoss), unrecognizable after facial reconstruction surgery, searches ravaged postwar Berlin for the husband (Ronald Zehrfeld) who might have betrayed her to the Nazis. Directed by Christian Petzold.

    Time: Nov. 24, 7 p.m., 8:55 p.m.

    Tickets: 40-50 yuan
