Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra will play Bernstein’s “The Overture to Candide,” Borodin’s “Symphony No. 2 in B Minor” and Brahms’ “Concerto for Violin and Cello.”
“The Overture to Candide” is one of the most frequently performed orchestral compositions by a 20th-century American composer; in 1987, it was the most often performed piece of concert music by Bernstein.
The overture incorporates tunes from the songs “The Best of All Possible Worlds,” “Battle Music,” “Oh, Happy We” and “Glitter and Be Gay” and melodies composed specifically for the overture. Dick Cavett used the “Glitter and Be Gay” portion of the overture at the midpoint of his ABC late-night TV show “The Dick Cavett Show.”
Borodin’s “Symphony No. 2 in B Minor” is considered the most important large-scale work completed by the composer himself. It has many melodic resemblances to both “Prince Igor” and “Mlada,” two theater works that diverted Borodin’s attention on and off during the six years of composition.
