Don't put all your eggs in one basket

    不要孤注一掷

    这个短语的字面解释是“别把鸡蛋都放在一个篮子里”。这是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: My friend recommended me to buy a stock last week. He said the company is doing great and will see revenues growing drastically towards the year end.

B: If you're going to invest in the stock market, my advice would be don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Note: This idiom means "Do not put all your resources in one possibility." This phrase is often attributed to Miguel Cervantes, the contemporary of Shakespeare and author of the world-famous "Don Quixote." However, Spanish doesn't use this phrase. Various English translators used it to convey his meaning. There is a German saying "Make sure you have a lot of legs to stand on," which is the same idea, but looked at from a more positive angle. Mark Twain had a comic version of the same proverb: "Put all your eggs in one basket - and watch the basket!"
