Artistic light installations will be lit up Saturday around Minghua ship at Sea World Plaza to welcome Christmas and the New Year.
The Third Sea World International Light Festival will be divided into two areas, with the outdoor area exhibiting works by domestic artists and the indoor area works by foreign artists. The outdoor installations are free to view while the indoor exhibition costs 50 yuan per person.
The international artists are James Turrell, Tracey Emin, Guido van der Werve, Keith Sonnier and Robert Irwin.
Turrell is an American artist primarily concerned with light and space. He is best known for his work “Roden Crater,” a natural cinder cone crater located outside Flagstaff, Arizona that he is turning into a massive naked-eye observatory.
Irwin’s work is held in more than 30 public collections worldwide, including the Center Georges Pompidou, Paris. Sonnier is a U.S. performance, video and light artist. Sonnier was one of the first artists to use light in sculpture in the 1960s and has been one of the most successful with this technique. Sonnier was a part of the Process Art Movement.
Van der Werve is a Dutch filmmaker and visual artist, notable for producing works physically testing his endurance. Van der Werve has created a variety of works, including a series of films and videos and a musical composition.
Emin is an English artist known for her autobiographical and confessional artwork. Emin produces work in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, film, photography, neon text and sewn applique. Though typically used for public address and advertisements, like bar signs and vacancy signs, Emin interestingly uses neon to communicate her private sentiments and intimate emotions, exploring the dichotomy between public and private.
