TWO foreigners died in the same place in Shenzhen sometime in the last few days, according to a reliable source Thursday. The source identified the dead as a French national and a person from South Africa.

Multiple sources have identified the Frenchman as Damien Douk, who was developing a smartwatch in Shenzhen. Douk’s Facebook profile has over 130,000 followers and multiple videos online show him displaying the smartwatch he was developing.

The other person who died was reportedly a 23-year-old South African named Sean Van Niekerk.

The cause of the deaths has not been confirmed, but Niekerk’s friend said the police at Tian’an Police Station in Futian District suggested the two may have died from a combination of food and alcohol poisoning.

Niekerk was reportedly a new arrival in Shenzhen and doing an internship. Niekerk’s mother has reportedly come to Shenzhen after flying into Hong Kong.

A policewoman at the Tian’an police station said they were investigating the case, but couldn’t reveal anything. The French Consulate in Guangzhou said that they had not received any information about a death.

This newspaper will follow the story as the facts are released.
