黑五
hēiwǔ
Meaning: "黑" means "black," and "五" means "five." This is the short form for "黑色星期五," which is "Black Friday," the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States. Since at least the 1930s, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, and most major retailers open very early, offering promotional sales. With online shopping prospering in China, many netizens also join the shopping spree on Black Friday buying overseas via platforms like tmall.com and amazon.cn.
Example:
A: 据说今年黑五,海淘党数量翻了七倍。
Jùshuō jīnnián hēiwǔ, hǎitáodǎng shùliàng fān le qī bèi。
It's reported that the number of online shoppers who bought things overseas on Black Friday grew by seven times this year compared with last year.
B: 我看到有些广告中的限量商品真心便宜,可是一般也抢不到。
Wǒ kàndào yǒuxiē guǎnggào zhōng de xiànliàng shāngpǐn zhēnxīn piányí, kěshì yībān yě qiǎngbùdào。
I saw stuff advertised really cheap in limited supply, but it's hard to get one competing with millions of others who want it too.
A: 你淘了什么吗?
Nǐ táo le shénme ma?
Did you buy anything.
B: 我买了些维生素钙片什么的。
Wǒ mǎi le xiē wéishēngsù gàipiàn shénme de。
I bought stuff like vitamins and calcium supplements.
