Marc Mean Trio to play jazz
     2015-December-7  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Marc Mean Trio, consisting of Marc Mean (piano), Jonas Ruther (drum) and Lukas Traxel (double bass), will perform Wednesday at On Stage.

A piano, double bass and drums are a pretty common combo, yet these three musicians have developed a variant of the trio on their own. Through the sensitivity and talent of each member, the trio found originality, cohesion and openness. Their music stands out by its collective consciousness and a constant risk-taking. Deftness and musicality enable this piano trio, not only the command of a rich range of nuances but also of versatile interaction, surprise and provocation.

Mean, from Switzerland, graduated from the Lausanne Conservatory and in 2007 he was a finalist at the Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition and won the Friedl Wald Scholarship. From 2008-2010, he studied at Copenhagen.

In 2011, he released his first album under his name with his trio, which received positive reviews. The same year, he participated with Mats-Up in the BMW Welt Jazz Award in Munich and won the Stanser Musik Tager competition with the Jean-Lou Treboux Group.

In 2014, he spent three months on a Pro Helvetia artistic residency in Shanghai leading to the formation of a duo with the pipa player Zhang Yi.

Traxel participated in projects with Tim Berne, Gerry Hemingway and Julian Arguelles. He also received an award from the Friedl-Wald Foundation in 2013 and represented the University of Lucerne at the IASJ Meeting 2014 in Cape Town. As a highly sought-after sideman he has shared the stage with artists such as Colin Vallon, Nils Wogram and Lionel Friedli and is a member of the Elina Duni Quartet.

Ruther is a very active drummer on the Swiss scene. In 2003, he won the UIL Championship in the US as “most outstanding multiple percussionist.”

During his study at the Luzern School of Jazz between 2007 and 2013, he was awarded two scholarships by the Friedl-Wald and Curt-Dienemann foundations. He is the leader of HELY, a piano-drums duo that took part of the Swiss Jazz Diagonale this year.
