Meaning:
“主要” means “primarily,” “看” in this context means “depending on” or “decided by,” and “气质” refers to a person’s “temperament, disposition.” This term, first used by Taiwanese singer and actress Cyndi Wang responding to a netizen’s comment on a photo accompanying her new album, became popular immediately and went viral with a small WeChat game. In the forementioned photo, Wang, dressed like a noblewoman from the past, opens her mouth ready to bite into a hamburger standing before a pure green backdrop. The netizen joked that such a photo left him dumbfounded, and Wang responded with this short sentence, implying that she is very cute and the weirdest costume on her will look good. The subsequent WeChat game challenged people to post selfies or photos of their pets, attached with this line; those who comment will either give out 5.21 yuan gift money or post a photo of themselves. Used more generally, this term now simply means “It depends.”
Example:
A: 你怎么看券商股未来的表现?
Nǐ zěnme kàn quànshāng gǔ wèilái de biǎoxiàn?
What’s your opinion on the future performance of broker dealer firm stocks?
B: 上周24家上市券商全都发布了11月份业绩月报,一半净利润环比增长,一半下滑。所以,都是券商,但主要看气质。
Shàngzhōu èrshísì jiā shàngshì quànshāng quán dōu fābù le shíyī yuèfèn yèjī yuèbào, yībàn jìnglìrùn huánbǐ zēngzhǎng, yībàn xiàhuá。Suǒyǐ, dōushì quànshāng, dàn zhǔyào kàn qìzhì。
All 24 broker dealers listed in the Chinese market published their November account currents last week, with half of them reporting increased net profits and another half reporting decreased net profits compared with October. Therefore, they are all broker dealers but their stock performance depends.
