Meaning:
Chinese people like to call something related to porn “yellow,” such as “yellow” books and “yellow” movies. It’s unclear how this reference came into being. “段子” refers to a short story, either spoken or written and often consisting of just a few lines. Often referring to crude jokes involving sex-related contents, “黄段子” frequently appears in online chat rooms, short messages and at dinner tables.
Example:
A: 你们周末的同学聚会怎么样?
Nǐmen zhōumò de tóngxué jùhuì zěnmeyàng?
How was your gathering with old classmates during the weekend?
B: 很开心,不过就是吃饭的时候有人讲黄段子,部分女同学有点尴尬。
Hěn Kāixīn, bùguò jìushì chīfàn de shíhòu yǒurén jiǎng huángduànzi, bùfēn nǚtóngxué yǒudiǎn gāngà。
It was fun. Only some female classmates were embarrassed when someone started to tell crude jokes at dinner.
