SHENZHEN’S transport commission estimates a traffic peak on expressways out of the city tomorrow as many local residents leave the city for a three-day New Year break.
The peak is expected to come after 4 p.m. tomorrow and the commission suggests drivers stagger hours for the holiday rush, which will cause traffic jams on the G15 (Shenzhen-Shantou Expressway), S30 (Yanba Expressway) and G25 (Huizhou-Heyuan Expressway).
Drivers going to Shaoguan, Qing-yuan and other northern Guangdong cities are advised to take the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway, or Guangzhou-Huizhou Expressway, according to the commission. Motorists are advised to avoid the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, which is expected to be heavily congested.
If the Guanlan section of the Meiguan Expressway is congested, motorists can take the Longda Expressway, the commission said.
Those driving on the G4 (Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway) can take the G107, the No. 107 National Highway, if the section in northern Guangdong is congested. For drivers going to Zhuhai and Zhanjiang the G325 is an alternative route to the likely congested Jiangmen section of the G15 (Foshan-Kaiping Expressway).
Holidaymakers staying in the city for year-end celebrations are advised to use public transport. Roads near checkpoint areas will be congested as a large number of people are expected to travel to Hong Kong to celebrate. The Metro service will be extended to 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve and to midnight on New Year’s Day. A number of bus routes will also extend their service hours to after midnight for the holidays.
