    创客

    chuàngkè

Meaning: "创" is short for "创造," which means to "create," and "客" literally means "guest." Translated from the English word "maker," this word was chosen by the Chinese linguistics journal "咬文嚼字" as one of its top 10 buzzwords of year 2015. The word refers to an individual or a group of individuals that makes things either for themselves or others. Typical interests enjoyed by the maker culture include engineering-oriented pursuits such as electronics, robotics, 3-D printing, and the use of CNC tools, as well as more traditional activities such as metalworking, woodworking, and, mainly, its predecessor, the traditional arts and crafts. This word became popular in China because the government is encouraging innovation and enterpreneurship in the general public.

    Example

    A: 你弟弟在哪儿工作?

    Nǐ dìdì zài nǎr gōngzuò?

Who does your younger brother work for?

    B: 他没找工作,每天和一群创客一起讨论各种创业项目。

Tā méi zhǎo gōngzuò, méitiān hé yīqún chuàngkè yīqǐ tǎolùn gèzhǒng chuàngyè xiàngmù。

He didn't look for a job. Every day, he discusses with a group of makers about possible startup projects.
