69 BODIES FOUND IN GUANGMING LANDSLIDE
     2016-January-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

TWENTY-FOUR days after the landslide, rescuers have recovered 69 bodies from the disaster site in Guangming New Area, authorities said Tuesday.

Eight people are still missing, the Shenzhen government’s information office said.

The identities of the 69 bodies have been confirmed. By Tuesday, 11 of the 17 people hospitalized following the landslide had been discharged.

An investigation showed that 31 suspects were involved in the manmade disaster that buried 33 buildings in Guangming on Dec. 20.

Among them, 16 have been arrested for their role, including a legal representative and a deputy general manager of the company that was in charge of the landfill, where a mountain of construction waste collapsed Dec. 20 in the Hengtaiyu Industrial Park.

They have been charged with causing a serious accident through negligence, according to Shenzhen prosecutors.

Another nine have been criminally detained while six others are still at large.

By 10 p.m. Tuesday, families of 65 victims had reached agreements on compensation with the local government and most of the relatives of the victims had left Shenzhen.

The 90 enterprises and 4,630 employees affected by the landslide have signed resettlement agreements.

The work safety incident is still under investigation.

Shenzhen has designated Dec. 20, the date of the landslide, as City Safety Day.

Shenzhen also designated 2016 as a Year of Urban Administration, during which large-scale safety checks will take place and urban administration will be enhanced.

The checks will focus on illegal buildings, dumpsites, unstable slopes, shabby and old buildings, dangerous chemical storage and transportation safety.
