AN adult female dog that was shot with an arrow that narrowly missed her spinal cord is still fighting for her life as a vet team worked desperately last night to remove pieces of broken vertebrae.
Dr. Mike Kosheluk and his team at TM’z Veterinary Clinic worked past midnight Tuesday removing broken pieces of vertebrae from a dog that was found with an arrow piercing her back.
The stray dog, now named Arrow, was shot by an arrow Tuesday that missed her spinal cord by only nine millimeters. She was found about 45 minutes northeast of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada.
Dr. Kosheluk said she is the “luckiest dog in the world.”
There are broken pieces of vertebrae still floating around, but the vet team was able to clean a lot of hair and “gunk” out of the large wound.
They were also able to run a drain through the entry of the wound to the exit, according to a Facebook post by CC RezQs Regina, a nonprofit organization rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes stray dogs.
A representative from the group said they weren’t able to release the location where she was found, but confirmed that it was at a “reserve located about 45 minutes northeast of Regina.”
CC RezQs said they have high hopes for her recovery, but they aren’t “out of the woods yet,” as the next few weeks are critical because of “bone fragments moving around.”
“We received a call from a resident on the reserve who found the dog on her property, and raced out as soon as we found out.
“We think her name is very fitting ... An arrow cannot move forward without first moving back.”
The group also noted that they had little information about Arrow, but two of their directors canceled their evening plans and went to pick her up and rushed her to the vet.
Arrow was able to move around in her kennel, but she is still very sore.
She attempted a short walk, but “doesn’t like leashes.”
The rescue group reported that her temperature was fine and “everything looks good.”(SD-Agencies)
