Give someone the slip
     2016-February-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Slip是“溜走、松开”,这个短语是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: You look tense. What’s up?

B: There was a man following me when I left the office, but I gave him the slip on the crowded main street.

A: Really? Are you sure it’s not your imagination?

B: I’m pretty sure. He followed me several blocks. I sped up and he sped up; I slowed down and he slowed down.

Note: This slang term means to “get away from or escape someone who is watching or following you.” Here, used as a noun, “slip” means “escape, as from a grasp, fastening, or restraint.” The use is said to have existed since the mid-1500s.
