Absurdist comedies to amuse locals

    Two Chinese absurdist comedies, “Mt. Wulong Duke” and “Goodbye Mr. Loser,” will amuse local audiences at Huaxia Art Center.

    As one of the best productions by Mahua Fun Age Productions Co. Ltd., “Goodbye Mr. Loser” centers on an unsuccessful man named Xia Luo. After he gets drunk at his ex-girlfriend’s wedding, he dreams that he goes back in time to his school years, takes revenge on his teachers, falls in love with the ex-girlfriend again and becomes a successful musician and writer. In September last year, a film version of “Goodbye Mr. Loser” was released and has grossed US$226.6 million in China.

    Mahua Fun Age Productions is renowned among young Chinese audiences for its absurdist humor and use of catchy Internet phrases.

    “Mt. Wulong Duke” is one of the most influential comedies of Mahua Fun Age Productions. Themes of the play include love, death, conspiracy, betrayal and revenge. The plot involves an undercover police officer who disguises himself as a “living animal” while solving a murder. Meanwhile, a robber thinks he can obtain a vault full of gold if he helps a bank president kill his adversary. However, the robber ends up locked inside the vault for three years. To kill time there, he learns the erhu (a two-stringed bowed Chinese musical instrument).
