Weekend, Lantern Festival events

   Lantern Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar, marking the last day of Lunar New Year celebrations. During Lantern Festival, people carry lanterns and solve riddles written on them. The lanterns symbolize good fortune. Glutinous rice balls, called yuanxiao or tangyuan in Chinese, are eaten during the festival. The round shape of the balls symbolizes family togetherness.

    Joyful Lantern Festival

    Shenzhen Museum will hold the annual Joyful Lantern Festival on Monday afternoon. Locals can enjoy traditional folk demonstrations, such as lion dances, qilin dances, acrobatics, handicrafts and riddle-solving. Glutinous rice balls and Hakka snacks will be offered at the event. People who guess the right answers of the lantern riddles can claim handicraft gifts or snacks from the organizers.

    Light show

    The light show at OCT Bay has seven theme zones, including Jurassic Park, Winter Wonderland, Golden Monkeys and a Taiwanese snack area.

    Lantern shows

    Lights in the shapes of flowers and animals will float on a river inside the Splendid China • China Folk Culture Villages. Singles are welcome to make a wish under the big “wishing tree” decorated with lanterns in the hope of finding true love. The tree is symbolic of good luck and hope.

    Time: 7 p.m., Feb. 22

    Guessing riddles

    More than 2,000 riddles will be presented for visitors to solve at a Lantern Festival activity at Shenzhen Library on Saturday. The riddles contain traditional Chinese culture knowledge. People who guess the right answers can claim gifts from the library.

    Elements of Hip-Hop

    Bring your friends and enjoy some of Shenzhen’s finest hip-hop at the Elements of Hip-Hop event. At the event, you can also enjoy graffiti art by local talents.

    Tunnel Rave

    The Real Deal is celebrating its fourth anniversary and the Tunnel Rave event will start with house music and slowly progress towards techno to keep party-goers swinging until sunrise. WJ Rose, Nimbus, Frankie Lam, Biting Eye, D-Soul and Subconscious Tales will perform. The 150-m LED strips will be installed inside the tunnel.

    UABB

    The Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (UABB) features hundreds of exhibitors from around the world as they explore topics of city development and life. Held in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, the UABB is Asia’s most prestigious architecture, design and urban planning event.

    ‘Adrift’

    Works by emerging young Chinese and Estonian artists are on display in the “Adrift” exhibition. It features eight videos, installations, sound art and photography, tackling the sociological issues of human mobility and migration.

    DJ Tommy Walker

    There’s only one word to describe Tommy Walker’s sets: energy. The milestone in the Australian DJ’s career so far is playing Ultra Music Festival in Miami 2014 and 2015. He had played among Tiesto, Dyro, Nicky Romero and Don Diablo. His experiments have led to the creation of his unique and highly energetic sound, which consists of electro combined with influences from trap, dubstep and drum & bass.

    Book Exchange

    Book Exchange is an event for local book-lovers to share books. The organizers currently have over 500 English and 100 Chinese books. Attendees are invited to donate and borrow books.

    ‘Cross Line’

    Eight artworks designed by eight domestic contemporary artists and handmade by seven traditional handicraft people are on display at the “Cross Line” exhibition. The artworks feature metal wire crocheting, cotton thread weaving, rattan weaving, bamboo weaving and silk embroidery.
