Annual 100 km walk to start registration
     2016-February-29  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The annual “100-Kilometer Walk” organized by doyouhike.net is scheduled to be held March 19 and 20. The registration begins midnight tonight and ends March 5 midnight.

As one of the city’s most grand and popular outdoor activities, this year’s walking route starts at Shenzhen Bay Sports Park at 5 p.m. March 19 and goes eastward to finish at Dapeng at 5 p.m. March 20. The journey is 101.5 km and will pass by Binhai Boulevard, Yitian Road, Shenzhen Central Park, Bijia Mountain, Aiguo Road, Donghu Park, Wutong Mountain, Yantian Checkpoint, Dameisha and Xichong Village. It normally will take experienced participants 16 to 24 hours to finish.

No admission fee is charged but participants should buy insurance by themselves and present it at registration. Participants should be aged 18-65 and form a group of four to eight to register on WeChat (mfhuodong). Individuals who don’t have a group can select to join other people’s groups listed on the WeChat when registering. The WeChat is in Chinese only.

In its 16th year, the nonprofit event attracts walkers and runners from around the country even though no prizes are awarded. Thousands of volunteers and police officers are placed along the routes every year, providing directions, free energy drinks, security and first-aid services.

Only 52 people joined the first walk in 2001 and six finished the 103.9-km journey from Sea World to Dongchong Beach in 20 hours. In recent years, tens of thousands of walkers have finished the whole route.(Cao Zhen)
