SHENZHEN-BASED genomics organization BGI announced Monday that it will offer free genetic evaluations to 100 patients with rare diseases.
The application process opened at 10 a.m. and 330 applicants had submitted their files by 6 p.m. Monday.
BGI, as the world’s largest genomics organization, launched the charity campaign to provide free genetic testing for patients with rare genetic disorders with a focus on needy families.
One-hundred sufferers of rare genetic diseases and two members of the patients’ family will also have their genes sequenced for free.
BGI said there was no deadline for submitting an application.
Most of the applicants have genetically inherited muscle disorders, albinism, or mental handicaps, BGI said.
“The quota for genetic testing is limited and BGI will consider prioritizing patients with urgent needs,” read a written response by BGI.
BGI said it would focus on families with more than one member suffering from a genetic disorder.
Applications that include a doctor’s written recommendation have a better chance of getting the testing.
Doctors should send the recommendation letter via his or her work email to info@229andme.com.
Any information submitted will be kept private, BGI said.
