Hat trick
     2016-March-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Hat是“帽子”,trick是“诡计”,这个短语是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: Did your team win the game?

B: We tied the game. Johnny managed to score a hat trick, with his last goal being a crucial equalizer scored in the 90th minute.

Note: This idiom refers to a series of three consecutive successes, in sport or some other area of activity. The term first appeared in 1858 in cricket, to describe H. H. Stephenson’s taking three wickets with three consecutive deliveries. Fans held a collection for Stephenson, and presented him with a hat bought with the proceeds. The term was used in print for the first time in 1868. The term was eventually adopted by many other sports including hockey, association football, water polo and team handball.
