Man spends 12 years digging underground art house
     2016-March-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

IT’S not just Hobbits who like to make their homes in holes.

A man in Costa Rica has dedicated 12 years of his life to creating a vast 63-foot-deep (19-meter-deep) underground house containing a treasure trove of creative wall art.

In a bid to escape noise pollution, Manuel Barrantes and his family reside in the subterranean haven in San Isidro de Perez Zeledon and even host tours for fascinated visitors.

The unique dwelling has been carved into red soil and volcanic rock, with several entrances leading into its mysterious depths.

There are three bedrooms inside for the family to use, along with a living room and meditation area decorated with plants and lights.

Images captured by a photographer invited inside the 2,000-square-foot (185-square-meter) house include one of Barrantes shaving using running water in his colorful stone bathroom.

While the thousands of feet of winding tunnels are fairly dark by themselves, splashes of colors and murals help to bring them to life.

These include characters from “The Flintstones,” along with family trinkets such as CDs, phones, photographs and money that have been attached to the rocky surfaces. (SD-Agencies)
