THE amazing moment a pro-surfer’s wave was snaked by a dolphin has been captured on video.
Byron Bay-based pro-surfer Soli Bailey was hitting the waves off the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia when a dolphin dropped in to show him how the locals do it.
The video shows the 19-year-old react quickly after seeing the dolphin shoot from the barrel of the wave he was riding.
“It was definitely a shock and unexpected,” Bailey said.
“Luckily I grew up in crowded surf, dodging him wasn’t much different to dodging someone’s head.”
The surfer has been riding waves since he was 2 years old and has never experienced anything like this.
“I think it is the most amazing and beautiful thing ever happen to me surfing.
“I have never come this close to a dolphin on a wave, and to catch that on camera was incredible.”
The waters of that stretch of coast are known for their wildlife, but especially for sharks.
But that didn’t stop the surfer from hopping in and he is glad he did.
“The dolphins were hanging around all morning so while it did feel a bit sharkey it wasn’t too bad,” he said.
And while he didn’t mind sharing the wave with the local this time he hopes it doesn’t happen again.
“If I had hit him it could have been really bad.
“With the speed I was going and the weight of the dolphin we both would have been injured.”
The video that was only shot last week went viral after being posted online.
“I’m not surprised that it has gone viral, I am more shocked we caught it. It isn’t something that people see every day so it is something they want to watch.”
The surfer was in South Australia with his friends on a trip away when he managed to share the wave with the dolphin.
He describes it as a “pretty special moment” in his surfing career.
The dolphin had only shared the wave with Bailey for a few seconds before it disappeared.
The surfer managed to stay on his board and continue his ride after the close encounter.
