    ‘Digging a Hole in China’

    “Digging a Hole in China” exhibition features a range of works produced in contemporary China that connect to the land. The exhibition attempts to expose and analyze the discrepancies between this genre of work and “conventional” land art as understood in the Western art historical context, thereby probing the potential of “land” as a cultural concept in artistic practice.

    European glass pieces

    Glass pieces on loan from the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague are on display, offering a thoughtful, expressive, and utterly breathtaking exploration of glassmaking in Europe from the 4th century B.C. to the present day. There is a large collection of Bohemian glass with enamel paintings and extravagantly cut glass bowls, plates, vases, goblets and bottles. Glass from other glassmaking regions of Europe are also on display.

    Photography workshop

    Shenzhen Art Museum will hold a black-and-white photography workshop April 16 in Shekou and a darkroom workshop April 23. Participants should bring their own cameras and ILFORD HP5 film rolls and gather at Dongjiaotou Metro Station Exit A at 1 p.m. on April 16 to shoot photos in Shekou. The top five participants will be selected to attend the darkroom workshop April 23.

    To attend the April 16 activity, applicants should send a message of “name + age + cellphone + email + 外拍” to Shenzhen Art Museum’s official WeChat: szam1976. The two workshops will be carried out in Chinese.

    

    Reggae Beachfest

    At the Reggae Beachfest on Saturday, you can enjoy reggae, dancehall, roots, dub, jungle, ska, rocksteady, beers, soft drinks, pole dance contest, beer pong, jerk chicken, Western food, beach meditation, surfing sessions and live music. DJs will be One Lovetron, Ragga Dragon, Soul Power, Ras Tayta, Irie Anima and Jah Quest.

    Tickets: 200 yuan (roundtrip bus fares, beach entry, party, open beer bar & soft drinks)

    Tickets can be bought on the buses, which leave from Shopping Park Metro Station Exit D at 2 p.m. Saturday and return at 4 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday. If you come on your own to the beach in Xichong Hesou Village (西冲鹤薮村), you only pay 100 yuan at the party at Secret Spot.

    Maximilian Hecker

    German musician Maximilian Hecker will give a show Saturday. Known for ethereal pop or dream pop music, Hecker’s style is similar to Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Tom Baxter and Nick Drake. He describes his songs as “melancholy pop hymns.”

    Asia Pet Fair

    More than 300 pet product companies will showcase their pet food, clothing and healthcare products at the three-day Asia Pet Fair in Bao’an District. Pet races, swimming and jumping contests will also be held.
