NAOMI WATTS is committing to television full-time.

    The two-time Oscar nominee has booked the starring role in Netflix drama series “Gypsy,” The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

    Picked up to series in January, the drama follows the journey of Jean Holloway, a therapist who begins to develop dangerous and intimate relationships with the people in her patients’ lives. Watts will star as Jean and also be credited as an executive producer.

    From writer/exec producer Lisa Rubin, the 10-episode drama is produced by Universal Television and Working Title. Working Title president Liza Chasin and Rubin also exec-produce alongside Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Sam Taylor-Johnson (“Fifty Shades of Grey”) will direct the first two episodes of the series, which will premiere in 2017.

    For Watts, “Gypsy” marks her largest stateside TV commitment to date. She’ll next appear in Showtime’s “Twin Peaks” revival and has done an episode of Netflix’s animated comedy “BoJack Horseman.” Her previous small-screen roles include NBC’s short-lived sci-fi drama “Sleepwalkers” and Australian drama “Home and Away.”

    On the big screen, Watts earned Oscar nominations for her leading roles in “The Impossible” and “21 Grams.” She’s currently starring in “Demolition” with Jake Gyllenhaal and has The Weinstein Co.’s “About Way,” Gus Van Sant’s “Sea of Trees” as well as “The Book of Henry” and “Shut In” in the works. Her roles have included “Birdman,” “While We’re Young,” “Divergent.” She will next star in “The Glass Castle” with Brie Larson.

    Watts’ casting comes as Netflix continues to invest in originals as the streaming giant plans to spend US$5 billion this year alone. Her casting comes as more film stars turn to the small screen. Netflix recently snagged “Maniac,” starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill and cast Drew Barrymore for her small-screen series-regular debut in comedy “Santa Clarita Diet.”(SD-Agencies)
