Cash for traffic violation tipoffs
     2016-May-2  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN residents can now get a reward of 100 yuan (US$15.4) for reporting up to 20 minor traffic violations in a month.

The award covers all minor traffic violations besides 33 major ones such as drivers’ illegal use of emergency lanes, hit-and-runs, overloading during the Spring Festival transport season, littering while driving, and failing to yield to pedestrians at intersections without traffic lights.

In addition, residents, who report drivers’ illegal parking at bus stops, illegal use of bus lanes or parking that causes serious congestion and traffic accidents, could get a cash reward of 100 yuan for one report.

“The maximum reward is 500 yuan a month for the same person,” Huang Hao, section chief of the Shenzhen traffic police commanding department, said at a news conference last week.

What’s more, cash rewards below 200 yuan will now be given through WeChat and the payout will be given once in each of the first two weeks of a month, according to the Shenzhen traffic police, to encourage more public participation.

To report serious violations such as street racing, blackmail through orchestrated accidents, and overloading, whistleblowers may get a reward of up to 3,000 yuan.

The Shenzhen traffic police have set up a center to handle the reports that the public send to the WeChat account, microblog, or Shenzhen police app.

The Shenzhen traffic police introduced rewards in December 2013. But rewards were limited to 33 major violations. By December 2015, a total of 1.26 million yuan were given out.
