吃豆腐

    chīdòufǔ

    Meaning: Literally meaning to "eat tofu," this Chinese term is often used to refer to the situation where a man takes advantage of or comes on to a woman, for example, by touching her breasts or hip. Originally, this term had the more general meaning of "taking advantage of others." In East China's Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, families who had held a funeral would often treat neighbors and friends who helped out at the ceremony to dinner. The dinner, of course, would consist of a lot of vegetables and tofu, as feasting on meat was considered inappropriate on such occasions. Those who hadn't helped out but would take advantage of the custom and enjoy a free dinner were therefore referred to as someone who "eats tofu."

    A: 你认识的那个小李有点不厚道。

    Nǐ rènshí de nàgè xiǎolǐ yǒudiǎn bù hòudào。

    Your friend Xiao Li is mean.

    B: 怎么啦？

    Zěnme la?

    Why do you say that?

    A: 上周我姐的电脑坏了，他主动提出帮忙修，可是修电脑的时候吃我姐的豆腐。

    Shàngzhōu wǒ jiě de diànnǎo huài le, tā zhǔdòng tíchū bāngmáng xīu, kěshì xīu diànnǎo de shíhòu chī wǒ jiě de dòufǔ。

    He offered to help my sister fix her computer last week when her computer broke down, but he came on to her while doing the job.
