Three free concerts and a lecture will greet local music fans at Shenzhen Concert Hall on the remaining Sunday afternoons this month. In the following weeks there will be a piano concert, a symphony performance, a lecture on a cappella and a vocal concert.
Chen Wuming, Vocal Asia’s executive officer, will lecture the audience May 8 on a cappella. Originating in Italy, a cappella has been used in both secular and religious music since medieval times. Modern groups not only focus on harmonizing, but sometimes also use their voices to emulate instruments. The repertoire ranges from classic compositions to popular songs. Local band BOOM will give a live performance during the lecture to help illustrate the art.
Seven young pianists from home and abroad will give a performance May 15. These players have won awards and proven their skill at music competitions.
There will be a solo concert by bass singer Cui Zongshun on May 22. One of the top 10 bass and baritone singers in China, Cui will perform folk songs as well as excerpts from operas. A graduate of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Cui trained with maestro Tom Kraus in Germany. He also earned a performing art diploma at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He has toured Europe, America and Asia.
The last performance comes May 29. A group of young musicians will perform symphony pieces for audience members.
With all members below the age of 20, the 280 instrument players work closely with the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra.
