Over 40 ink and wash paintings by Chinese artist Zhang Wenlai are on exhibit at Guan Shanyue Art Museum through May 18.
Most of the paintings are depictions of human figures, in particular people at work. Many are factory workers.
Zhang is known for using ink and water to create the effect of a freehand sketch on his paintings while keeping pictures realistic.
Unlike many artists who may use glue or salt to make water more controllable on the drawing paper, Zhang developed his own way of using water and ink.
Zhang represents the current generation of Chinese artists who grew up during an age when traditional Chinese art is in a constant clash with Western art. Having received training in oil painting, Zhang is skillful at integrating Western painting methods into his creations.
Art critic Sun Zhenhua said Zhang made a breakthrough in traditional Chinese painting with his realistic depictions. “Zhang has brought the human figures in his paintings to life by creating a space for them, which is rare in traditional Chinese paintings. For example, the workers are true to life against the background of the factory and the machine. We hope traditional Chinese painting will be nourished by the efforts of this generation of artists making breakthroughs with their wisdom and skill.” (Zhao Jie)
